Vehicle use has grown dramatically in Afghanistan since 2002. The number of passenger cars registered in the country in 2003 was 340,000, an increase of 94% from the previous year (this increase in registration is also the result of a greater drive to register vehicles by the Ministry of Transportation). This growth is expected to continue in the medium term, albeit from a low level of car ownership by international standards. 1.4% of the Afghan population currently owns a vehicle, and this number is projected to grow to 4% of the population by 2015.
